Perception of a Flaw

How do you imagine a flaw of yourself?

Sometimes I think of a mirror. It shows a version of me, something more perfectly imaged, so in this case I must picture the flaw as myself. It is inherent, or maybe a costume, a shirt I am wearing. I know what I could look like, but in this idealization, I cannot find the path to get there.

Other times I picture my mind like a village, an island remote, receding from others. I look up at the sky and find it dark, bathing the town in ink. The flaw is seeping into every board and shingle, every crack in the walkway, soaking into dirt. It will take a long time to remove it, and every time I think I may have sucked it all out, there is more, behind bricks, hidden.

Other times I think of a clay sculpture, of one artist's mindset that the artwork is already there -- one only needs to carve it out. This, at first, is appealing, and I take the wire clay cutter to remove the excess. What I find later is that I have shaven too much away, and the thinnest version of me is not the best. But if you move the goalpost (or if you never made one in the first place), you can always find more to remove.

How do you see your flaws?

In other news:

  • I am a part of Drop-Kick Comics, and we are releasing our first comic very soon. It just went to print! We are so excited... this is a big step in a very exciting direction.

  • Still tinkering on an album idea. Need to record more for it, but the comic takes up a lot of time. I got inspired for one song and may release it as a single, so I'll keep you updated. It has a pretty interesting horror theme, so maybe I'll release it in time for Halloween?

  • Inktober has begun! I wasn't a fan of the official prompt list, so I found another. I'll draw or write depending on how I feel, though writing seems to come easier when I'm tuckered out from working on the comic. I may post on my Instagram if there's anything cool to share. Are you doing Inktober? Which prompts, and what format?

  • Starting a couple side projects -- one of them a little visual/audio treat. It's an excerpt of a sci-fi book that I got inspired by! My friend Kevin stars as the counterpart in the story, and I'll be drawing a lot for it. I want to make it more animatic and less storybook. We'll see how it goes.

  • I'm also co-writing with two other friends to make a lovely little fantasy story. It's fascinating to merge all of our writing styles into a cohesive story line. Definitely a lot of fun.

  • My full time job is here! I work as a live captionist for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students at college. It's super enjoyable, and I love sitting in on all the classes.

Woof, a lot of updates. I've been meeting so many new people which has been a pleasure, and taking on many quick projects that feed the soul. Alive, alive... hope all is well with you and yours!

I try to maintain a balance between recognizing my flaws and being cognizant of them, while also not letting that awareness consume me. If I ignore my flaws too much, I get complacent and repeat mistakes. If I fixate on them too much, it brings me down and makes me stressed and anxious. It’s not always easy to find that balance.

To answer your Inktober question, I’m going to at least try to do some sketches based on the alternate list of prompts. I’m already kind of stumped by today’s prompt, though (“reaching”??).
